Men's Soccer Earns First Win of 07'

Gaviria Stonewalls Chargers

New Haven, CT...Bloomfield College men's soccer team earned it's first win of the 2007 season with a dramatic 1-0 victory over the University of New Haven (0-4-0).  The Deacons traveled to Conneticut to battle the Chargers on their home turf and with the win, BC's record now stands at 1-3-0 on the season.

In what proved to be a very physical game, which included a total of 49 fouls and five yellow cards, the heroes for Bloomfield College were sophomore goalie Julian Gaviria (West New York, NJ/Memorial) and junior mid-fielder Victor Rios (Hillside, NJ/Hillside). Gaviria faced 21 shots and made 10 saves on the way to posting his first shut out of the season, while Rios scored the game's only goal in the 74th minute.

UNH threatened early in the first period but just missed jumping out to a 1-0 lead when Jessey Fernandez hit the cross bar at 5:59.  Fernandez was given another golden opportunity to put the Chargers on the board in the second half at 52:39 when he squared off against Gaviria for a penalty kick. Gaviria answered the call however, turning away Fernandez's offer, and kept the game knotted at 0-0.

Rios finally broke the scoreless tie at 74:51 with a one-touch tap-in into an empty net on a crossing pass from Eduardo Velarde (Harrison, NJ/Harrison).    The Deacons 1-0 lead proved to be all the support Gaviria would need, after making one final save in the 87th minute to preserve the shutout.

UNH goalie James Hilaire also played well in net, facing 23 shots and making nine saves.

The win is the first win for Bloomfield College men's soccer under the direction of first year head coach Juan-Sebastian Fernandez.

The Deacons will be back on the pitch on Tuesday, September 11th, when they host Nyack College at 4:00 PM in their first CACC game of the season.
